Moving to New Zealand from the UK (2026): Visas, Tax, Pensions
What British citizens need to move to New Zealand in 2026: visa routes, why UK tax stops when you leave, the frozen state pension trap, driving, and pets.
General information, not legal or tax advice — see full disclaimer .
Reader, before you start: this guide is for British citizens planning a real move. The good news up front: unlike Americans, you don’t carry a tax-filing obligation just for holding the passport. The trap is the pension. If you’re only visiting first, read the NZeTA and visitor visa guide; for the move logistics common to everyone, see moving to New Zealand in 2026. This is not financial advice — confirm your own position with a qualified adviser.
What this guide covers
Britons have moved to New Zealand for generations, and most of the move is straightforward: you drive on the same side, your licence converts without a test, and once you leave, UK tax mostly stops following you. The catch is retirement money — the UK State Pension is frozen the day you claim it in New Zealand, and then partly clawed back again. That’s the part to understand before you go.
- The visa routes open to you as a UK citizen
- Why UK tax stops when you become non-resident
- The frozen state pension and the NZ Super deduction — the real money trap
- Driving, pets, and the 24-hour reality
Last verified: June 10, 2026. Tax and pension rules come from gov.uk, immigration rules from Immigration New Zealand, and pension-interaction rules from Work and Income NZ. Several changed in 2025–2026; check current figures before acting.
Your visa options as a UK citizen
- Working Holiday Visa. Britons get the best deal of any nationality: ages 18 to 35, and durations of 12, 23, or up to 36 months — the longest scheme available. The quota is 15,000 places, and you need to show at least NZD $350 per month of living funds (Immigration New Zealand — UK Working Holiday Visa). See the full Working Holiday Visa guide.
- Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV). The main employer-sponsored route — details in the AEWV guide.
- Residence. Through the Green List or the points-based Skilled Migrant Category — see New Zealand residence pathways.
UK tax: it mostly stops when you leave
This is where being British is simpler than being American. The UK taxes on residence, not citizenship. Once you become non-UK-resident, “you do not pay UK tax on your foreign income” — only on income that still comes from the UK, like UK rental property (gov.uk — tax on foreign income).
So your New Zealand salary is a matter for New Zealand, not HMRC. You don’t keep filing UK returns just because you hold a UK passport.
Two things to do it properly:
- Work out your residence status under the Statutory Residence Test. It’s a day-counting and “ties” test, decided per tax year — not something you simply elect.
- Tell HMRC you’re leaving with form P85. In the year you move, split-year treatment can divide the tax year into a UK part and an overseas part, so you’re not taxed in the UK on NZ income earned after you go.
A UK–New Zealand double taxation convention is in force, so the same income shouldn’t be taxed twice (gov.uk — New Zealand tax treaties).
The pension trap: frozen, then deducted
If retirement is anywhere on your horizon, read this twice. It’s the single most expensive thing British migrants don’t know.
Your UK State Pension is frozen in New Zealand
The UK only increases your State Pension each year if you live in the EEA, Switzerland, or a country with the right agreement. New Zealand is not one of them. Gov.uk says it directly: you get yearly increases only in qualifying countries, “(but you cannot get increases in Canada or New Zealand)” (gov.uk — State Pension if you retire abroad).
In plain terms: the pound figure you first receive in New Zealand is the figure you keep — for life, with no inflation rises. Over a long retirement, that erodes badly.
Then New Zealand deducts it from NZ Super
It gets worse. Under the UK–NZ Social Security Convention, if you qualify for NZ Superannuation, your UK State Pension is generally deducted from it, close to dollar-for-dollar (Work and Income — UK pension and living in NZ). You don’t collect both in full. So a British pensioner in New Zealand can be hit twice: a frozen UK pension, and that frozen amount reducing their NZ Super.
Voluntary National Insurance — useful, but the rules just changed
You can pay voluntary National Insurance to protect your future UK State Pension while abroad, via form CF83. Two recent changes matter, and most older guides are now wrong:
- From 6 April 2026, you can no longer pay the cheap Class 2 for periods abroad — only Class 3. And new Class 3 applications now require either 10 continuous years living in the UK or 10 qualifying years on your record (gov.uk — voluntary NI abroad from 6 April 2026).
- There’s a reason to bother despite the deduction above: since 2020, the part of an overseas pension built from voluntary contributions is not deducted from NZ Super. That carve-out is what can make voluntary NI worthwhile — but it now collides with the 2026 rule change, so get advice for your own record rather than following a blog.
Driving in New Zealand
Easy for Britons. You drive on the left, same as home — no adjustment. You can drive on your full UK licence for your first 18 months (NZTA — driving on NZ roads). The UK is an exempt country, so when you convert to a full NZ licence you don’t sit the theory or practical test — provided you’ve held the UK licence for at least two years (NZTA — converting from an exempt country).
Pets and household goods
New Zealand’s biosecurity is strict, and it applies to you like everyone else.
- Pets. The UK is an approved country, but bringing a cat or dog still needs an MPI import permit (apply weeks ahead; processing takes around 30 working days), ISO microchip, rabies and other required tests, and a minimum 10 days in an approved quarantine facility on arrival (MPI — bringing cats and dogs). Some breeds are banned. Start months ahead.
- Household goods. Everything must be clean and free of soil, plant matter, and insects. Used outdoor gear, garden tools, bikes, and vacuum cleaners are inspected and may be treated or seized. Clean it before it’s packed.
The 24-hour reality
There is no nonstop flight. London to Auckland is one of the longest journeys you can make — roughly 24 hours of flying with at least one stop, usually via the Middle East or Asia. New Zealand is 11–13 hours ahead of the UK, which makes calls home awkward and the distance, over time, real. Budget for how rarely and expensively you’ll get back.
What they don’t tell you
- The pension is frozen the moment you claim it here. No annual increases, ever, while you live in New Zealand. Over a 20-year retirement that’s a large, silent loss.
- NZ Super doesn’t stack on top of your UK pension. It’s reduced by roughly what your UK pension pays. Britons expecting “both pensions” are usually wrong.
- The cheap Class 2 NI route closed on 6 April 2026. Guides quoting “£3.45 a week, anyone can pay” are out of date. It’s Class 3 now, with a 10-year qualifying rule.
- Driving is the easy bit. Same side of the road, no test to convert, 18 months to do it. Don’t overthink this one.
- Biosecurity treats Britons like everyone else. “It’s only from the UK” cuts no ice at the border. Muddy boots and an unwashed bike get pulled.
Frequently asked questions
Do I still pay UK tax if I live in New Zealand?
Generally no, on your New Zealand income. The UK taxes on residence, not citizenship, so once you’re non-UK-resident under the Statutory Residence Test you don’t pay UK tax on foreign income or keep filing returns just for being British. UK-source income, such as UK rental property, can still be taxed.
Is the UK State Pension frozen in New Zealand?
Yes. New Zealand is a “frozen pension” country — your UK State Pension does not get the annual increases it would in the UK or the EEA. The amount is fixed at what you first receive there. This is confirmed on gov.uk.
Will I get both the UK State Pension and NZ Super?
Not in full. Under the UK–NZ Social Security Convention, your UK State Pension is generally deducted from your NZ Superannuation, close to dollar-for-dollar. The exception is the portion of a UK pension built from voluntary contributions, which isn’t deducted.
Can I drive in New Zealand on my UK licence?
Yes, for your first 18 months. The UK is an exempt country, so you can then convert to a full NZ licence without sitting the theory or practical test, as long as you’ve held your UK licence for at least two years. You drive on the left, same as the UK.
What visa can I get as a UK citizen?
If you’re 18 to 35, the UK working holiday visa is the most generous available — up to 36 months. Otherwise the main routes are the employer-sponsored AEWV and residence through the Green List or Skilled Migrant Category. A job offer makes everything easier.
Should I keep paying National Insurance after I move?
Possibly, but the rules changed on 6 April 2026 — Class 2 is gone for periods abroad and Class 3 needs a 10-year qualifying history. Because voluntary contributions also affect how much NZ Super is deducted, this is genuinely complex. Get advice based on your actual NI record.
Next steps
Sort your visa first, then deal with the money. File a P85 with HMRC when you leave and confirm your residence position. If retirement is on the horizon, get proper advice on the frozen-pension and NZ Super interaction before you assume anything — it’s the costliest blind spot for British migrants. For setting up your money on arrival, read the bank account and IRD number guide, and if permanent residence is the goal, start with New Zealand residence pathways.
