Reader, before you start: this guide is for US passport holders taking a short tourism or business trip to Singapore. If you plan to work, study, or move there long-term, that needs a separate work pass or visa — not covered here. This is the pre-trip checklist for a normal visit.

What this guide covers

The good news for Americans is simple: you don’t need a visa to visit Singapore. The part that trips people up is everything else — the mandatory online arrival card with its tight submission window, the passport rule airlines enforce before you fly, and the fact that your “90 days” isn’t guaranteed. This is the dated, plain-English version of what you actually have to do.

  • Whether you need a visa (you don’t — for tourism or business)
  • The free SG Arrival Card (SGAC) and how to avoid the scam sites
  • The passport, money, and onward-ticket rules that get checked
  • How long you can actually stay, and how to extend it

Last verified: June 17, 2026. Visa rules change. Confirm the current requirements on the official ICA site before you book — links are throughout and at the end.

Do US citizens need a visa for Singapore?

No. US passport holders — regular, official, and diplomatic — do not need a visa to enter Singapore for tourism or business visits (Singapore Embassy, Washington DC).

Instead of a visa, you’re granted a Visit Pass when you arrive, issued electronically (more on that below). You don’t apply for anything in advance — but you do have to submit the free SG Arrival Card before you fly, and meet the passport and entry rules. Those are covered next.

A visa only enters the picture if you want to work, study, or stay long-term. That’s a different process entirely.

How long can you stay?

Here’s the nuance most articles flatten into a single number.

Singapore issues Visit Passes for 14, 30, or 90 days, and the length is decided by the immigration officer (or the automated clearance system) at the checkpoint based on your travel profile (ICA). US citizens are typically granted up to 90 days — the longest stay Singapore gives — but it is not automatic or guaranteed.

What this means for you:

  • Don’t assume 90. If you book a 75-day trip and get stamped for 30, that’s a problem you discover after you land. Most American tourists get the full stretch, but plan with the e-Pass you actually receive, not the one you expect.
  • There’s no passport stamp anymore. Since March 11, 2022, Singapore notifies you of your Visit Pass digitally — by email — as an electronic visit pass (e-Pass). It states your last allowed day of stay. There is no ink in your passport to glance at later.
  • Check your real expiry date. Use ICA’s Visit Pass validity tool to confirm your last day of stay. Overstaying — even by accident because you assumed 90 days — carries fines and worse.

The SG Arrival Card (SGAC)

This is the step Americans miss because “visa-free” makes them think there’s nothing to do.

Every traveler must submit the SG Arrival Card with Electronic Health Declaration before arriving in Singapore. It’s an online form run by the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA), and the health declaration is built into it (ICA).

It is free — watch for fake sites

The SGAC costs nothing. The only official channels are the ICA SGAC e-Service and the MyICA mobile app. ICA has issued a public advisory specifically because copycat sites charge a “service fee” to file the free form for you. They are not the government. Use the ica.gov.sg address and nothing else.

When to submit it

Submit it within three (3) days before your arrival, counting your arrival day. So if you land on June 30, you can file from June 28 onward. File it too early and it won’t be accepted; do it in that window and before you travel.

Who has to file

  • Every non-resident traveler entering Singapore — each person needs their own submission, including children.
  • Air, sea, and land arrivals are all covered, with narrow exceptions for those transiting without immigration clearance and certain residents using land checkpoints.
  • Being visa-free changes nothing here. The SGAC is mandatory regardless of your visa status.

Passport, money, and onward ticket

Passport: six months’ validity

Your passport must be valid for at least six months if you’re not a Singapore passport holder (ICA). Airlines enforce this at US check-in. If you fail it, you won’t be allowed to board — this is the single most common reason Americans get turned away before they ever leave home. If your passport is within six months of expiring, renew before you book.

Proof of funds and an onward ticket

Short-term visitors should carry sufficient funds for their stay and proof of onward or return travel — tickets out of Singapore (ICA).

In practice these are risk-based checks, not stamped on every passenger. The onward-ticket rule is enforced most often by airlines at check-in, because the carrier is liable if you’re refused entry. The honest takeaway: have a return or onward ticket booked, and don’t show up with a one-way ticket and no plan. Either the airline counter or the immigration officer can ask.

Staying longer than your pass

If the days you’re granted aren’t enough, you can apply to extend your Short-Term Visit Pass (STVP) through ICA before your current e-Pass expires (ICA — Seeking Extension of Visit Pass). Extensions are at ICA’s discretion and are not guaranteed, so don’t build a trip around getting one.

If you’re planning to work, study, run a business, or relocate, none of that runs on a Visit Pass — you need the appropriate work pass or long-term visa, applied for through the relevant Singapore authority before you make plans around it.

What they don’t tell you

  • The passport rule is enforced before you fly. Six months’ validity is checked at US check-in, not in Singapore. If you’re close, renew first.
  • “90 days” is a ceiling, not a promise. The officer can grant 14, 30, or 90. Plan around the e-Pass you actually receive, and verify it with ICA’s validity tool.
  • There’s no stamp to check. Your stay length lives in an email. Save the e-Pass notification and know your last allowed day before you start booking a longer itinerary.
  • The arrival card scam. Sites that charge for the SGAC are not the government. ICA has a public advisory about exactly this. The real one is free at ica.gov.sg.
  • Visa-free is not entry-guaranteed. Even with no visa needed, the officer at the checkpoint makes the final call — carry your onward ticket and proof you can fund your stay.

Frequently asked questions

Do US citizens need a visa to visit Singapore?

No. US passport holders don’t need a visa for tourism or business visits. You’re issued an electronic Visit Pass on arrival. You still must submit the free SG Arrival Card before you fly and meet the six-month passport rule.

How long can Americans stay in Singapore without a visa?

Singapore issues Visit Passes of 14, 30, or 90 days, decided by the immigration officer at entry. US citizens are typically granted up to 90 days, but it isn’t automatic — check your actual e-Pass expiry with ICA’s Visit Pass validity tool.

Is the SG Arrival Card really free?

Yes. The SGAC is free on ICA’s official e-Service and the MyICA app. Third-party sites that charge a fee are copycats, not the Singapore government — ICA has issued a public advisory warning about them.

When do I submit the SG Arrival Card?

Within three days before your arrival, counting your arrival day. For example, arriving June 30 means you can file from June 28. Do it before you travel.

What passport validity do I need for Singapore?

At least six months. Airlines enforce this at check-in, and failing it is the most common reason travelers are denied boarding. Renew early if you’re close to expiry.

Do I need a return or onward ticket?

You should carry proof of onward or return travel and enough funds for your stay. It’s enforced most often by airlines at check-in, but immigration can ask too. Don’t arrive on a one-way ticket with no plan.

Next steps

Before you fly: confirm your passport has at least six months left, book a return or onward ticket, and submit the free SG Arrival Card on the official ICA site within three days of arrival. After you land, check your e-Pass email for your actual last day of stay rather than assuming 90 days. If you’re heading elsewhere in the region, the rules differ by country — Americans face a separate (and changing) set of requirements for Thailand, and a longer stay in the region might mean living in Hong Kong as an expat.
